Narcotics investigators seized 2,781 marijuana plants during a raid early Thursday near Mountain Ranch.

This is a record-breaking season in Calaveras for marijuana plants. This latest seizure brings the total number of marijuana plants seized to 30,857.

“I think our best year is 21,000,” marijuana plants seized, said Sgt. Dave Sewell, who has worked at the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department for 20 years.
“We don’t do anything differently,” he said, when asked why the department has discovered more marijuana plants this season-which typically runs from April to October-than any other season.

Thursday’s raid was near West Murray Creek and Doster roads on land the investigators described as “public.” Much of the public lands in that area are owned by the Bureau of Land Management.

Investigators described it as three different gardens that were 30 yards apart, connected by trails. The plants ranged in size from one to five feet tall.

The growers had used tarps to construct a makeshift dam in a nearby creek, as a water source for the plants, according to investigators.

No one was found at the grow site, but investigators did find two tents and other evidence suggesting someone had been living there.
