Maggie, a nearly 8,000-pound pachyderm who was the last of her species living in Alaska, has safely relocated to San Andreas.

In an unbelievable logistical maneuver, the U.S. Air Force, two cranes and two trucks helped Maggie make her journey to the Performing Animal Welfare Society’s Ark 2000 sanctuary in Calaveras County Friday.
This video, shot by Enterprise reporter Mike Taylor, follows Maggie as she first rolls into the 2,300-acre facility and eventually takes her first steps in the Mother Lode.

" This is the kind of thing kids should be watching on TV. Species helping other species. I wish the network stations would air it so that people remember there are very good people out there doing very good things. I love this story. Kudos to all involved. "

" YEA!! Some good news, for a change. Kudos to all who took part in getting Maggie to CA... into a better climate and with other elephants! Her SURPRISE and JOY must be beyond our understanding. Hopefully, not such joy and surprise as to cause her heart to burst with pure happiness, though! "

" Maggie is my hero, along with all the people who brought her to the sanctuary. And bless Bob Barker. Now let's please get the elephants at 6 Flags Sea World in Vallejo, California to a sanctuary. The AZA says they are thriving but they are not. Their feet are in bad condition and they are not treated well. This year a giraffe died there because she was in a barn in the outskirts of the property. There was a fire and no one there to see it and save her. No one watching the animals at night! God bless Maggie. I love the story of her arrival at PAWS. "

Mattie wrote on Dec 5, 2007 3:32 PM:

" I saw her in Alaska zoo when whe was a about 2 yrs old. She was makin loud noise and banking her head against the metal door. When the truck pulled near the fence loaded with dry hay, she picked up some dry hay which was lying on the ground next to her feet and started to wipe the fence gate with the dry hay, shaking her head no more dry hay "

" Please everyone Maggie at PAWS still needs our help. The costly move and few donations are sure to slow the recovery of other wildlife. Please donate to PAWS, check out their news and alerts for information. Maggie has received so little support "

Alison wrote on Feb 18, 2008 7:26 PM:

" Aww! I love Maggie! I'm gonna miss her! I'm glad shes with other elephants now though! And she must've been so scared on the way down all by herself! lol and yay for Bob Barker! He's totally awesome! "

Rose Marie wrote on Apr 2, 2008 1:50 AM:

" I am so happy to see Maggie in her new home. I used to go see her at the zoo in Anchorage, and felt so sad for her especially after her friend died. I knew how lonely she must have been. It is so wonderful that she can be outdoors in the sunshine with her new friends. I hope she enjoys many happy years. Thanks you so much Bob Barker and PAWS for making this possible! "

Jill Bosch wrote on Jan 13, 2009 12:58 PM:

" Thanks to all the people who helped to bring Maggie to PAWS. I wanted to cry when I saw the video and am so relieved for Maggie. "
