The Bret Harte Union High School District is now $500,000 closer toward construction of a multipurpose room at Bret Harte High, thanks to a donation from a community member who wishes to remain anonymous.
“With this donation the Board of Education has been given direction to go ahead with plans,” for the multipurpose room, Superintendent Michael Chimente said.
The donation was accepted as part of the Board of Education’s consent agenda at its regularly scheduled meeting Monday night.
The multipurpose room, according to Chimente, is the No. 1 priority for the Facilities Committee. It will be constructed as a joint partnership agreement with a yet-to-be-determined nonprofit organization, which will then apply to the state for funding under the agreement.
One example of a joint partnership the district is involved with is its agreement with the city of Angels Camp and Calaveras County regarding use of the school’s sports complex. Mark Twain Union Elementary School District is also in partnership with the city and county for use of the elementary school’s gym.
The application for funding is due to the California Department of Education by May 1, Chimente said. The district will be notified in August as to whether or not it will receive the funding.
If funding is approved, the state will pay for half of the project, with the school district and the nonprofit providing 25 percent each to cover the remaining cost. If not, the board will consider other ways to fund the project, if at all, including the possibility of putting funding in voters’ hands through a bond measure.
