On Friday, October 3rd at 6:30, the doors of the Douglas Flat Schoolhouse will be open to everyone interested in learning more about sustainable living and local self-reliance. This public gathering of the Foothill Collaboration for Sustainability (FoCuS) will feature wines, cheeses, and delicacies from local sustainable farms. A local musical group named E’k’B featuring artists Erin Ross, Bill Welles, and Kent Walsh, will perform two short concert segments. Co-founder Dr. Jakob Jaggy, whose holistic medical practice is in Columbia, will be the featured speaker, talking about the vision of FoCuS. FoCuS is a rapidly growing local 501(c)3 nonprofit organization devoted to promoting sustainable lifestyles, businesses, agriculture, housing, transportation, sustainable energy solutions, and health and wellness in Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties.
The Douglas Flat Schoolhouse is the oldest surviving schoolhouse in Calaveras County, located on Main Street, Douglas Flat. The exact date it was built is not know, but it is either 1854 or 1856, and it remains in much the same condition as during the gold rush days. Seating is limited to 65 people so, come early, bring your own chair, eating utensils, and cup or wine glass. Carpooling is encouraged through Yahoo groups Sonorapassrides for Tuolumne County, or Ebbettspassrides for Calaveras County. Come mingle and meet folks with kindred interests and lifestyles.
