Sequoia Woods Country Club was unable to duplicate its magical run of 2004, falling in the quarterfinals of the Northern California Golf Association team match playoffs.
On Oct. 2, Sequoia Woods, which won three playoff matches to reach the quarterfinals, was beaten 22-14 by Whitney Oaks Golf Club of Rocklin.
Twelve players from each team compete in each match with six team members playing at home and six playing on the road.
According to captain Tim Hanrahan, Sequoia Woods players scored well at Whitney Oaks, but didn’t play as well as expected at home.
“(Whitney Oaks) did really well on our course, which is normally our protection,” Hanrahan said.
Sequoia Woods was trying to win the NCGA team match championship for the first time since 2004.
“The guys were pretty excited to get this far,” Hanrahan said. “We were hoping to repeat our win in 2004, but there are a lot of good golfers out there.”
Whitney Oaks advanced to the semifinals, which will be held Oct. 24, followed by the finals Oct. 25 in Monterey.
Sequoia Woods advanced to the playoffs by winning its regular season group, which included Greenhorn Creek, Saddle Creek and Mountain Springs of Sonora. In the playoffs, Sequoia Woods defeated Oakdale Country Club, The Reserve at Spanos Park of Stockton and Blue Rock Springs of Vallejo en route to the quarterfinals.
Team members were Hanrahan, Jim Huth, Jerry Patterson, Allan Corbett, John Jordan, Len Thomas, Barry Abbott, Don Trefry, Harold Hood, Hal Lane, Gene Huhn, Ray Canning, Dick Allen, Kemo Luce, Steve Locke, Jerry Stowe, Bob Asher, Ken Hoekstra, Chris Mano, and Tom Coggan, who was the captain of the 2004 team.
