Do you remember the first time you saw Yosemite National Park? Most people recall that breathtaking moment and awestruck feeling. The crisp smell of the forest and the fine mist of the waterfalls, gentle on your face, are captivating memories.
Truly one of California's beloved treasures, Yosemite has become a favorite adventure for a bus full of local seniors. Foothill Village's lifestyles program has discovered a real hit among its residents. Whether it is spring or fall, when a trip to Yosemite appears on the monthly calendar of events, the excitement echoes through the dining room, lounge and library.
The following are quotes from a few of the residents and staff who attended Foothill Village's May trip to Yosemite. From Dr. Haig Albarian: “I've never seen the falls so full. I used to camp here during the summer. We would hike all of the trails to the top and fish for trout. At night we would watch the fire falls.”
Foothill Village bus driver Te Harrison spoke about their experience: “As we rounded a curve just past Tioga Pass, we noticed a group of cars and people on the side of the road looking at something. We slowed our bus to a crawl and peered out the windows. I shouted, 'a bear!' The seniors were thrilled to have had a nice viewing of one of Yosemite's native residents.”
Jane Lang, who is a regular on the trips, added the following: “Happiness is a Foothill Village bus adventure to Yosemite with my extended family on board. Yes!”
Lifestyles Director Jeannette McConnell spotted a serene picnic ground on the banks of the Merced River for all to enjoy. After placing checkered red-and-white cloths on the tables, platters of gourmet food were served. The rustling of the Aspen trees provided a tranquil atmosphere. The lunchtime entertainment consisted of rafters cruising by and squawking blue jays demanding scraps from the meal.
After a scenic stroll, a stop at the museum and Visitors Center provided the fascinating history of the Yosemite Valley. The Foothill Villagers were able to capture a Kodak moment of Yosemite Falls before heading off into the sunset towards Angels Camp
