A Christmas to Remember started more than 20 years ago with a small monetary donation from an area citizen – the idea was to purchase new winter clothing for needy children.
The effort was embraced by a local radio station and with a collection point and live radio broadcasting for two days in December, expanded to solicit donations from the residents of Amador and Calaveras counties.
Today, the Christmas to Remember Foundation, along with Hometown Radio and underwriters Jackson Lions Club and Western Calaveras Lions, continue the work that started so long ago. Last year, through the generosity of area service organizations, employee organizations and countless individuals, new winter clothing was purchased for more 700 children from Amador and western Calaveras county schools.
Christmas to Remember is strictly a money-raising effort. Funds raised are used to purchase new clothing for area children and youth who are identified through Amador and western Calaveras schools. Fundraising effort lasts two days the first week in December. This year, those dates are Dec. 2 and 3. Children are taken shopping at the Jackson K-Mart, assisted by adult volunteers and high school peer counselors.
Christmas to Remember is not a collection spot for used clothing or a toy drive. Donation collection locations for 2009 are:
• Main location and site of live Hometown Radio broadcast: Cost Less Foods parking lot, Jackson.
• Frank’s Café in Mokelumne Hill.
• West Point post office.
• Mar-Val in Valley Springs.
• Wells Fargo in San Andreas.
• Jenny Lind, Valley Springs, Mokelumne Hill, San Andreas, Rail Road Flat and West Point elementary schools and Toyon Middle School.
Donations of cash, or by check or credit card, are gratefully accepted. Your dollar, given locally, helps locally. No donations to the program are used to cover expenses. All donations directly help a needy child with new winter clothing.
