Sue Castleman, DO, has joined Sierra Internal Medicine, a primary care clinic and service of Sonora Regional Medical Center. Dr. Castleman is an internal medicine specialist providing care for adults of all ages with a special focus on preventative medicine.

“My goal is to help people take as few medications as possible,” said Dr. Castleman. “Medicines can be very helpful, even lifesaving, but I also encourage my patients to take responsibility for their health with gradual lifestyle changes.”

Dr. Castleman grew up in a small town in Michigan, youngest of five siblings and daughter of a general physician. She was fascinated by her father’s work and always had the idea of practicing medicine herself one day. After taking time to pursue a career in music and theater, and while raising three sons, Dr. Castleman finished her degree in physiology and continued with a master’s in social work. She earned her doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from Michigan State University and completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Mich. As an internal medicine specialist, Dr. Castleman has served in many aspects of care – as hospitalist, general internist and as medical director for a hospice care center and home hospice program.

Dr. Castleman enjoys working with patients in a primary care setting, helping them manage their health conditions and maximize health. Fitness is important to Dr. Castleman and she tries to impart this on her patients. She enjoys many activities including yoga, hiking, skiing, tennis, golf and has even competed in several triathlons. Music remains a passion for Dr. Castleman, who spent many years teaching piano. Two of her sons live nearby in Murphys; both are musicians who also work in the wine industry.
