An approximately one-acre grass fire was quick to be squelched by fire crews shortly after it erupted behind a set of apartments next to Saint Andrews Catholic Cemetery, according to California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) officials.

Fire crews from San Andreas and Mokelumne Hill Fire Protection Districts and the Cal Fire Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit arrived on scene quickly as a small blaze started behind the Meadowview Terrace apartments on Friday. The fire was contained within an hour.

Apartment Manager Jennifer deBettencourt said she was alerted to the blaze at about 2:20 p.m. Firefighters and sheriffs deputies were there about seven minutes later.

It’s unclear how the fire began, but deBettencourt said they’ve had problems with homeless encampments on the private property the apartments back up to.

No evacuations were necessary from the 26 units, deBettencourt said.

San Andreas Fire Chief Don Young told the Enterprise Friday that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
