A Valley Springs resident was killed Saturday, June 15, as she was driving to San Francisco for a friend’s funeral. The accident occurred in Contra Costa County, just outside the town of Brentwood.

According to the preliminary police report, at about 9:30 a.m., Mary Hopper, 47, was driving a silver Dodge Charger west on March Creek Road when witnesses say she ran a red light at Vasco Road, broadsiding a blue Dodge Caravan which contained six people – two adults and four children.

Hopper was flown by helicopter to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where she was pronounced dead. The 39-year-old male driver of the Caravan and his wife were also flown by helicopter to John Muir Medical Center with major injuries. And the children were transported to Children’s Hospital in Oakland for treatment and are in stable condition.

Hopper, 47, was a long-time county resident and worked at Patti’s Country Kitchen in Valley Springs.

“She’s been my head waitress for a few years,” said owner Patricia Campbell. “And really, she was my daughter-in-law, too.

“She’s just going to be missed greatly, by not only her family and all her friends, but all the people who have come to know her over the years. She was a good lady with a sweet smile.”

The funeral for Hopper will be held today at 6 p.m. at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in San Francisco. The family also plans to hold a memorial in Calaveras County sometime in the near future.
