One driver, Janeva Thorbrogger, 30, of Valley Springs, was transported to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries after another driver, David Alexander, 79, of Mokelumne Hill, entered the opposite lane and struck her vehicle head-on, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Both drivers were driving at speeds of under 50 mph in heavy rain and hail at the time of the accident, CHP reported. Alexander allowed his vehicle to leave the roadway into the north shoulder of Highway 12, overcorrected and went into the opposite lane, striking Thorbrogger's vehicle.

Alexander and two juvenile passengers in Thorbrogger's vehicle, ages 10 and 3, sustained minor injuries. The two children were transported to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, while Alexander refused transport.

Drugs and/or alcohol were not believed to be a factor in the collision.
