Proponents of recalling District 5 Supervisor Steve Kearney turned in petition signatures on the last day possible Monday; now the Elections Department must go through them and see if enough are valid to place the measure on the ballot.
“We’re shooting for the November election,” said County Clerk and Registrar of Voters Rebecca Turner.
The recall group needs 1,245 valid signatures to get the measure on the ballot. The Elections Department will have to certify at least that number from the submitted documents.
The recall against Kearney was prompted, in part, by his vote to allow a proposed asphalt plant to operate at Hogan Quarry near Valley Springs without first obtaining a use permit. The site is in his district and some neighbors of the proposed plant objected to it.
If recall proponents get enough signatures but the signature checking is not done by early July, then the recall would be conducted through a special election to be held after the November General Election, according an Elections Department spokeswoman.
