Mary Louise (Schmidt) Slater

Former resident of Calaveras County

Mary passed away on Feb. 26, 2019, at her home in Star, Ida. Mary was born the middle daughter to the Reverend F. Carl and Florence (Plumb) Schmidt in York, Neb., on April 14, 1925, thereafter moving to California at a young age. In 1946 Mary graduated from the College of the Pacific and subsequently married the late F. Dale Slater, in Reno, Nev. Their marriage produced three daughters, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mary was a school teacher, a homemaker and an insurance company forms designer. Upon retirement, Mary and Dale moved to Calaveras County where Mary was active in the community, being named citizen of the year in 1992. After Dale’s death in 2005, Mary settled in Idaho to live out the last chapter of her life.

Mary is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Carol Anne (Ken) Lawlor, Patricia Lynn (Bill) Breedlove and Connie Louise (Barry) Waggener; her loving sister, Phyllis Reed; grandchildren, Cate (Gene) Homicki, Scott (Anna) White, Paul (Jamie Somers) Freeman, Emily Freeman, Brett (Monica) Radu, Kristen (Rich) Persinger, and John Waggener; great-grandchildren, Zachary Radu and Haylie Freeman; along with nephews, nieces and friends.

Family and friends are invited to share their favorite memories and stories in celebration of Mary’s life at the Peoples Cemetery in San Andreas on June 1, 2019, at 1 p.m.
