W. Reed Severson

W. Reed Severson, age 87, of Angels Camp, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2019, in Sonora. A Celebration of Life to honor Reed will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, 2019, at Camps Restaurant on the Wisteria Patio.

Reed was born in Idaho to Walter and Dora Severson. He married Roberta (Bobbi) Bergdale in 1964 in Richmond, Calif. He graduated from Armstrong Business College in Berkeley. He ran his own insurance agency for 41 years. He was a veteran of the Korean War, served proudly in the U.S Navy and had a lot of fun while in the service.

Reed was a renaissance man, starting work as a boy shining shoes, delivering newspapers and working the sugar beet fields. He worked at Walgreens as a soda jerk, and as a baker for Albertsons after high school. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1950, and drove a taxicab in the Oakland/Alameda area. He also taught ballroom dancing for Arthur Murray Dance Studios. The Navy didn’t pay much. Reed became a hair stylist while putting himself through Armstrong Business College. After college, Reed went to work for New York Life; that was the beginning of his lifelong career in sales. Opening the New York Life office in Fremont in 1967, he joined Life Underwriters Association of Southern Alameda County. He was involved in numerous charitable organizations during his 32 years in Fremont.

Moving to Angels Camp in 1999, he semiretired. He enjoyed selling insurance on the golf course. During his career, Reed received many awards, too numerous to mention. Reed was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Dora Severson; and his brothers, Richard and Ronald Severson.

He is survived by his sister, Eileen Vitale. Reed is survived by his wife, Bobbi Severson; their children, Laura Lilly, Mike and Debbi Severson, Patrick Severson, Veronica and David Metildi; grandchildren, Jacob and Crystal Severson, Jessica and Austen Epps, Antonio Orozco, Sarah Severson, Kyle (Severson) Ruggles, Shane Skiles, Alyssa and Mike Pirone, Jeanee Hagen and Tyler Metildi. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Tatum Hagen, Carson Severson, Brooke Severson and Luca Pirone, with three more on the way!

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Resource Connection, 444 E. St. Charles St., Suite B, San Andreas, CA 95249.
