Arnold J. Vandenberg of Murphys passed away on April 27, 2019, at age 85. He was born in Haarlem, Netherlands, and was the second child of 13, born to Cornelius and Wilma Vandenberg. He immigrated to America at age 18, along with his family, and entered the military. Shortly after, he began a dairy farm with two of his brothers and later owned and operated a carwash in Merced. Soccer was his passion and he spent many hours following it on television. He enjoyed an early retirement in the town of Arnold, living a simple and quiet life in the mountains where he enjoyed walking his dogs and spending time in his woodworking shop. Arnold is survived by his wife Elke, his children and their spouses, Theresa and Stephan Donche, Frank and Ardel Vandenberg, Yvonne and Steve Brindle and Lisa and Steve Lee. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Jessica, Nathalie, Jordan, Isabella, Maxwell and Anthony. He is also survived by his siblings, Antone, Fred, Hans, Wilma, Marian, Elizabeth and Theo, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by sons, Anthony and Arnold Jr. A Celebration of Life will be held on Oct. 19 in the town of Murphys, and details to be announced later.
