If you are concerned about the condition of your local roads, the safety of your home, the cost of county government or the vitality of your community’s economy, then you need to comment on the General Plan Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR), which has been released for written public comment. The deadline to submit your comments is Aug. 13.

Don’t miss your chance to improve the county’s programs to accommodate future economic development while reducing over a dozen adverse effects on roads, emergency services and historical and natural resources. The last time county residents had this broad of an opportunity to comprehensively improve the county was during the general plan update of 1996, over 20 years ago. Who knows when you will get another chance?

You can review the DEIR at the Calaveras County Library in San Andreas or online at planning.calaverasgov.us/GP-Update/CEQA. Send your written comments by U.S. mail to Peter Maurer, Planning Director, Calaveras County Planning Department, 891 Mountain Ranch Road, San Andreas, CA 95249, or by email to pmaurer@co.calaveras.ca.us. You also have the opportunity to speak to the county about issues and concerns at a public meeting on Tuesday, July 31, at 6 p.m. at the Board of Supervisors chambers in San Andreas.

If you would like to learn more about how to comment on an EIR, you can get pointers from the Calaveras Planning Coalition website at calaverascap.com, or you can come to the CPC’s Brown Bag DEIR Commenting Workshop on Aug. 6 at 1 p.m. at the Calaveras County Library in San Andreas. Another option is to arrange for a free evening workshop for your local community group by contacting me, Tom Infusino, Calaveras Planning Coalition facilitator, at tomi@volcano.net.

The Planning Coalition has been protecting our rural environment by promoting citizen participation in sustainable land use planning since 2006.
