Gov’s water shortage order is onerous
Posted: April 14, 2015 - 6:00 am

Executive order B-29-15 by Gov. Jerry Brown concerning the water shortage seems extensive and onerous.

Don’t censor letters to the editor
Posted: April 14, 2015 - 6:00 am

My husband and I subscribe to the Enterprise and I enjoy reading all of the opinion letters even if I don’t agree with them or I think they don’t have their facts correct.

SEIU-UHW homecare union is a failure
Posted: April 14, 2015 - 6:00 am

Attention all Calaveras County In-Home Supportive Services homecare workers: In June 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that homecare workers across the nation, including Calaveras County, are no longer required to pay mandated union dues!

I am one third of the Trivia Bee team called Two Chicks and a Dude. We are all three members of the Valley Springs Book Club. We were very thrilled to win the 2015 contest this year.

Conserve water and halt construction in places without it
Posted: April 03, 2015 - 6:00 am

Essential water is an emotional topic. People show up in force for public discussion of water issues. They express concern for letting water out for salmon smolts. The fact that they are asking that a practice like that should be stopped concerns me.

Pot industry is not a boon, despite cash spent locally
Posted: April 03, 2015 - 6:00 am

I read Mr. Michael Robinson’s letter about economic growth with interest. Although he briefly mentioned overall growth, he focused on the local marijuana industry and seemed to insinuate the board of supervisors should do the right thing when passing any regulations pertaining to the raising and selling of marijuana.

Calaveras High arts teacher is an advocate
Posted: March 24, 2015 - 6:00 am

If fine arts teacher Suzanne Smith loses her job at Calaveras High School, it will be a tragedy for the students, the school and the community. Suzanne is not just a fully credentialed fine arts teacher, she’s a compassionate student advocate. She has had an enormous impact on the school and the students and this all appears about to end.

Supes have chance to aid economic growth
Posted: March 24, 2015 - 6:00 am

Over the past seven years or so, I have been increasingly disgruntled with what I witness happening in my beloved Calaveras County. I have become painfully aware that our past supervisors have done little to balance the loss of jobs and to counter the county’s slide downward with regards to encouraging the amount of growth and prosperity our county needs to survive as well as prosper.

Hawver Road bridge is necessary for safety
Posted: March 24, 2015 - 6:00 am

After going on the Public Works Department website, it is obvious that the county has done a lot of due diligence regarding the Hawver Road bridge. There are maps, photos and a lot of information regarding the reasoning for the size and design of this project.

We are blessed to have Mark Twain Medical Center
Posted: March 20, 2015 - 6:00 am

In early March, I was admitted to Mark Twain Medical Center on an emergency basis. I wish to commend the staff there for their excellent service: Dr. Gordon Lum; Dr. Randall Lorenz; nurses Ellen Bautista and Anna McGuire; nurses Lisa and Felix whose last names I don’t know; and radiology technician Judy Myers.

Don’t cower before totalitarian ACLU suit
Posted: March 10, 2015 - 6:00 am

The Board of Supervisors voted in 2014 to make a resolution recognizing the good work done by a local group, Door of Hope, to address a benefit to young women facing an unplanned pregnancy. The group offering this service free of charge has a Christian orientation. The board was in no way setting a precedence of supporting the Christian process of this group but rather the positive support, in general, that it offers to women in this dilemma. No taxpayer funds were given to Door of Hope.

Widespread marijuana use would increase support for Obama
Posted: March 10, 2015 - 6:00 am

There seems to be a sincere attempt within the new left to redirect the national focus from life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to sex drugs and rock and roll. We now have a nearly complete abolition of the death penalty, a citizenry contaminated with illegal aliens and convicted criminals from prisoner releases and a school system that teaches gay history and Cesar Chavez’ biography to kids that cannot read or write. I guess that it then becomes logical that a vigorous campaign would be waged to legalize marijuana.

ACLU is intolerant of Christians and doesn’t support gun rights
Posted: March 10, 2015 - 6:00 am

Most people think that the American Civil Liberties Union is there to protect their rights as established by the Constitution. Within certain parameters, the ACLU does a fair job; however, the one constitutional right they will not and have never defended is your Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

Why is Bill Cosby silent on rape accusations?
Posted: February 27, 2015 - 6:00 am

I am writing in response to Ted Shannon’s opinion piece, “The majority is not always right.” Although I found Mr. Shannon’s piece well written and thought-provoking, I must disagree with several points.

Calaveras gets fleeced by college measure
Posted: February 17, 2015 - 6:00 am

Angela Fairchilds, president of Columbia College writes in the Enterprise of Feb. 10, (I’m summarizing) about Measure E, which authorized a $326 million bond (which we are all paying for) to build a college in Calaveras County, among other places. That’s not going to happen, but don’t worry, folks, the language of Measure E allows us to divert the money to other projects.

Artist should be recognized for Giants chair
Posted: February 17, 2015 - 6:00 am

I enjoyed the article and picture of the San Francisco Giants chair that was auctioned at a fund raiser for the Calaveras County Soroptimists and the Calaveras County Arts Council. It was a beautifully decorated chair and earned the highest bid for the event.

Teachers helped my son to succeed at Calaveras High School
Posted: February 13, 2015 - 6:00 am

I am a mother of two, one of whom attends Calaveras High School and I would like to publicly thank two teachers who have done a lot to help my son succeed in school. In the last two and a half years, Mrs. (Sarah) Swift and Mr. (Mitchell) Hodson have both inspired and followed through on pledges to not let my son slip through the cracks. He struggled to make the transition to high school, but with their help he is currently on track to graduate. Thank you both so much for your dedication to our youth, and for making learning exciting.

Editor’s note: Campbell said in an email that he is currently paid an annual base salary of approximately $131,000 following a recent reduction of just over 6 percent. According to public records posted online by California State Controller Betty Yee, Michael Chimente, the superintendent for Bret Harte Union High School District received regular pay of $155,613 in 2013, the most recent year for which the information was posted. Neither Calaveras Unified nor Amador County Unified School District, the district that includes Argonaut High School, posted salary data to the Controller web site. Campbell said in an email that he was not sure why Calaveras Unified had not reported the salary data and that he would check into the matter.

Medical pot zoning proposal triggers lobbying before it is unveiled
Updated: February 18, 2015 - 2:54 pm

Editor’s note: In recent months, Calaveras County elected and appointed officials have reported that they are being lobbied heavily by people with an interest in a not-yet-released proposal to set zoning standards for medical marijuana gardens in the county. At The Calaveras Enterprise, we have also received a number of phone calls, both from people who said they wish to buy property in Calaveras County to grow medical marijuana and from residents who don’t want to have medical marijuana gardens near their homes.

Zeller mischaracterized Citizens Committee
Posted: February 03, 2015 - 6:00 am

In response to Muriel Zeller’s letter concerning how the boundaries of the plan she supports were enlarged, my understanding is that CalTrans required a larger area (if memory serves me correct it included Burson, Wallace, etc.).

Positive encounter with Planning Department
Posted: February 03, 2015 - 6:00 am

Recently we had sought information and advice from the Calaveras County Planning Department. We went with some trepidation knowing that people had said negative things about the department in the past.
