Redskin is a racial slur
Posted: May 19, 2015 - 6:00 am

As a retired teacher, proud of her former students now at Calaveras High, I feel the need to weigh in on the debate over the nickname “Redskins.” It seems that many defenders of the name are not aware of its history.

An open letter to Gov. Brown and the state water board
Posted: May 19, 2015 - 6:00 am

I was really surprised that recreation releases from our rivers were not included in your recent mandated water cutback orders of 25 percent along with the curtailment notices for junior water rights holders and holders of senior water rights.

Respect feelings of those offended by Redskins
Posted: May 19, 2015 - 6:00 am

Mr. Shannon’s editorial, “Our Redskins Are Threatened,” makes a number of intelligent arguments for allowing public schools and sports franchises to continue using the name “Redskins.”  However, he is missing the most important point. Even if the majority of people are not offended, the fact that it offends some of our population is enough to warrant a change. If some find it to be a negative connotation, then it should be changed. I will not bother listing the numerous derogatory terms used to describe sectors of our society. We would never want our children’s schools to use any of those names for their mascots. I realize it is tough to change a tradition, but let’s respect others’ feelings.

Mark Twain Heart Center is an asset
Posted: May 15, 2015 - 6:00 am

I recently had reason to visit the new Heart Center at Mark Twain Medical Center as an outpatient. I would like our general population to know what a great asset the center is to our county. The speed of care and the courtesy that I met with was outstanding. Efficiency, kindness and humor all went to make my visit comfortable and nonthreatening.

Praise for Animal Services Division manager Henning Schreiber
Posted: May 15, 2015 - 6:00 am

I wanted to give a shout-out to Henning Schreiber, Calaveras County Animal Services manager. I know him personally and he is one of the most loving people when it comes to animals. He has done wonders for the shelter with what he has to work with. I am a huge advocate of no-kill and trap, neuter and release and belong to a lot of organizations that aspire toward that. Henning and his people have done whatever they can to attain that and, considering what has transpired over the years, his 85 percent (success rate) is great. Perhaps it might be well for someone like (letter writer) Eileen McFall to sit down and talk with him and his staff to become knowledgeable about what they are doing to save animals. The network of animal organizations is out there now for helping with the saving of animals and finding them forever homes and Henning and his staff utilize them. Best Friends is a good example. Again, give Henning credit for all that he does. The animals are lucky. Also, shame on the people who have animals and can’t or don’t care for them and often end up in the animal shelter.

Ask more questions about the proposed Redskins name ban
Posted: May 15, 2015 - 6:00 am

You had an article on Friday, May 8, that was titled “State votes to require Calaveras High School to change its mascot from Redskins.”

Calaveras Humane Society supports Animal Services
Posted: May 12, 2015 - 6:00 am

I am writing in response to Ms. McFall’s letter published May 1. The Calaveras Humane Society wholly supports the efforts of Calaveras County Animal Services. In spite of continued budget constraints, animal population increases and a down economy, which means more people are unable to keep their pets, this department has continued to do its best with an overwhelming county animal population.

We must grow and change with the times
Posted: May 12, 2015 - 6:00 am

I am also an alumnus of Calaveras High School along with my sister and grandmother. I value the education I received there and the heritage I was fortunate enough to continue as a graduate of 1995. I felt pride in the Redskins mascot and never felt that it was derogatory to Native Americans in any way.

Ban Vikings name too if Redskins prohibited
Posted: May 08, 2015 - 6:00 am

Yeah, if you government bullies are going to ban Redskins, I demand that you ban Vikings as it insults Norwegians throughout this country.

Choose more respectful Native American symbol
Posted: May 08, 2015 - 6:00 am

Since Facebook blew up with the news that a bill may be passed that bans Redskins as a mascot, I’ve been reading statements from Calaveras High School alumni stating how upsetting it is that we are being forced to change when we have never used the name in a derogatory way. I just wanted to take a moment to attempt to shed some light on why there is support for this bill.

Keep up the fight against Cal Fire fee
Posted: May 08, 2015 - 6:00 am

For the 13 percent of people who are standing the line against the illegal Cal Fire fee that was placed on our homes in violation of Proposition 13, I urge you to keep up the good fight. As for me and my home, I will not be blackmailed by this illegal fee.

Not everyone has or can use a computer
Posted: May 08, 2015 - 6:00 am

I have had these thoughts for quite some time. Numbers of people I know do not have a computer nor know how to use one, or email, Internet, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Or use cell phones. They are not all seniors. Some are 50 or younger.

Nation and state have more important issues to consider than school mascot names
Posted: May 05, 2015 - 6:00 am

Given the recent article on April 24, and the seemingly likely passage of the latest mascot-related legislation, Assembly Bill 30, squarely focused on just the term Redskins, I am compelled to provide perspective, as has been oft stated in the 18 years that this has been on the radar during my time here as an administrator in the Calaveras Unified School District.

Legalizing marijuana could generate tax revenue in California
Posted: May 05, 2015 - 6:00 am

I can understand why the Calaveras County Board of Supervisor’s meeting on Tuesday, April 14, drew such a large crowd. (story April 17) The topic was one that has been a problem since the early 1930s when marijuana was demonized to control the growing of hemp in this country and it was classified as addictive and dangerous with no medicinal value by the federal government.

Brown is brave to advocate for eliminating Redskins name
Posted: May 04, 2015 - 7:50 am

Bravo Dahkota Franklin Kicking Bear Brown! Great article! Brown, a junior at Argonaut High School, is kicking it! He should be commended for his bravery and leadership on the mascot issue. A mascot is supposed to be a good luck object.

Animal Services Manager responds
Posted: May 01, 2015 - 6:00 am

At Animal Services, we achieve what we consider good outcomes 85 percent of the time for dogs. Good outcomes include dogs that are returned to their owners, dog adoptions as well as dogs that are sent to various rescues, including the Calaveras Humane Society giving these animals a second chance. The 85 percent success rate cited above far exceeds the national average for shelters in adoptions and rescues.

Marijuana use does not cause people to support Obama
Posted: April 28, 2015 - 6:00 am

The controversy of alcohol and marijuana can be looked at from many different aspects. But clearly research shows these two substances are nowhere near the same and should not be treated as such.

Posted: April 28, 2015 - 6:00 am

Do you know where your local library is located? There are eight branches of the Calaveras County Library. In addition to the central library in San Andreas, there are the Angels Camp, Arnold, Copperopolis, Mokelumne Hill, Murphys, Valley Springs and West Point branches.

Cooperation and celebration are keys to solving problems
Posted: April 24, 2015 - 6:00 am

Many years ago I was privileged to attend a lecture by the semanticist S. I. Hayakawa. His theme was that a word has a different meaning to any two persons who hear it at the same time and even to the same person who hears it again in a different context. This is important to know if we are to understand one another.

A public thank you for Mark Twain Medical Center
Posted: April 24, 2015 - 6:00 am

I would like to give a public thank you to the staff at Mark Twain Medical Center. I know that they often get a bad rap and years ago I would have said the same thing. But this month I had surgery and was required to stay in the hospital for two nights. I could not have received better care.
