Trials of love explored in Sonora musical

Ryan Perez Adame, Carrie Lyn Brandon, Robyne Parrish and Cody Gerszewski star in “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.”

Sierra Repertory Theatre presents Joe DiPietro’s and Jimmy Roberts’ musical, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change!” at the East Sonora Theatre in Sonora, opening July 5 for a run through Aug. 4.

This celebration of the mating game takes on the truths and myths behind that contemporary conundrum known as “the relationship.” Act I explores the journey from dating and waiting to love and marriage, while Act II reveals the agonies and triumphs of in-laws and newborns, trips in the family car and pick-up techniques employed by the geriatric set.

“This hilarious revue pays tribute to those who have loved and lost, to those who have fallen on their face at the portal of romance, to those who have dared to ask, ‘Say, what are you doing Saturday night?’” says a release.

With book and lyrics by DiPietro (“Memphis” and “Nice Work if You Can Get It”) and music by Roberts (“The Thing About Men” and “The Velveteen Rabbit”), “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” played at off-Broadway’s Westside Theatre from 1996 to 2008.

“Four actors take the audience on a hilarious musical journey through the torments of bad dates, lines for the ladies’ room and finding your soul mate,” says director Jerry Lee. “It’s a terrific musical about what happens when life seems perfect and then the rug gets pulled out from under you. It’s a show about resilience in the face of bad blind dates, wedding fiascos and child rearing. And you get to enjoy excellent comedic acting! We’re welcoming back some pretty fantastic friends: Cody Gerszewski from ‘The Great American Trailer Park Musical,’ Carrie Lyn Brandon who played Sophie in last year’s ‘Mamma Mia!,’ and Robyne Parrish from last year’s ‘Away in the Basement.’ Ryan Perez Adame, who will be making his Sierra Rep debut, is rounding out this terrific ensemble! The production features live accompaniment by music director James Welch on piano and Kaden Culp on violin.”

The troupe alerts parents to the fact the show is rated PG-13 for mature themes and language.

“I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” plays at 7 p.m. July 5, then 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays through Aug. 4. The show plays at the East Sonora Theatre, 13891 Mono Way, Sonora.

Tickets are$20 to $37 at or 532-3120.

The company notes that tickets for shows on July 5 and 6 are $25 each, and there is an opening night party after the July 5 show. On July 26, a Post-Show Talkback is presented after the show, featuring members of the cast, included with admission.
