The Calaveras High School boys’ soccer team’s bid for two consecutive wins to begin Mother Lode League play was thwarted by the Argonaut Mustangs. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie Thursday night in Jackson.
Although Calaveras outshot Argonaut, only one of those attempts found net. After scoring three goals Tuesday night against Sonora, Calaveras junior Andrew Celli kept his streak alive by scoring his team’s only goal. Celli was assisted by senior Mateo Alliende. Sophomore goalkeeper Allan Ramos recorded eight saves.
“It was one of those games where it seemed like there was a barrier in front of the goal,” said Calaveras head coach Rob Leetham. “Our offense generated a ton of shots, but unfortunately, we just couldn't convert. Our guys played a clean, aggressive, hard fought soccer match tonight and a tie doesn’t hurt us too badly this early in the season. We need to find the back of the net though.”
Calaveras (5-6-1, 1-0-1 MLL) will have two home games next week, with Amador making its way to San Andreas on Thursday and then hosting county rival Bret Harte on Thursday. Both games will begin at 5:45 p.m.
