It’s safe to say that the Calaveras boys’ basketball team stunned the Sonora Wildcats. Calaveras entered Mother Lode League play on a three-game losing streak and had to face Sonora, who had won three in a row and had 14 total victories.
With 41 seconds to play and Sonora leading Calaveras by two, sophomore Connor Arnold grabbed a defensive rebound and passed the ball up the floor to Tevin Azavedo, who then made a pass from the corner to senior John Millsaps who was resting at the wing. With time about to expire, Millsaps drained a 3-point basket at the buzzer to beat the Wildcats 52-51 Tuesday night at Bud Castle Gym in Sonora.
Junior Shawn Mantz led Calaveras with 13 points, followed by Tyler Adams with 12, Arnold had 11 and Millsaps had eight, including the game-winner.
Calaveras (12-7, 1-0 MLL) will try to win another on the road as it takes on Argonaut (10-7, 1-0) at 7:30 p.m., Friday in Jackson.
“I’m really proud of the way we played tonight,” said Calaveras head coach Kraig Clifton. “We had a tough, no-quit attitude. Now, we need to get ready for Argonaut.”
