Youth cross country runners compete at county championship

The Calaveras County Fairgrounds was the home to the 2017 Calaveras County Middle School Cross Country Championships, held Friday, Nov. 3. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade boys and girls took to the trails in an attempts to cross the finish line first.

A total of 97 students competed in Friday’s races.

Sixth grade

In the sixth grade girls’ race, Avery Middle School took first place, followed by Mark Twain Elementary and Christian Family Learning.

In the 1.5-mile run, Avery’s Tanner MacDonald finished first with a time of 11:21.69. Avery’s Addy Sturm took second in 11:34.52. Mark Twain’s Morgan Reeder finished fourth, crossing the finish line in 11:39.83. And Avery’s Addy Heermance finished in 11:57.90, good enough for fifth place.

In the boys’ race, Bellview Elementary took first, with Christian Family Learning taking second.

Christian Family Learning’s Rhys Kelsey finished second, with a time of 10:29.05 and teammate Elias Weidman took fifth in 11:12.15. Avery’s Brody Burita finished sixth and Ian Bauer, of Mark Twain, finished ninth.

Seventh grade

In the seventh grade girls 2-mile race, Avery Middle School took home first place with Toyon Middle School finishing second.

Gold Rush Charter’s Brianna Personius finished first, with her time of 13:50.09. Avery’s Aariah Fox took second, finishing in 13:55.20. Christian Family Learning’s Sage Kelsey finished third. Avery’s Mackenzie Epperly finished fourth with a time of 15:53.74. And Toyon’s Grace Dazmin finished in 16:31.22, good enough for fifth place.

In the boys race, Toyon took first, followed by Avery and Mark Twain.

Toyon’s Tyler Hutt was the first to cross the finish line, doing so in 13:10.85. Christian Family Learning’s Winter Whittle finished second in 13:21.95. Toyon’s Logan Gomes took third in 13:31.33. And Avery’s Kieriun O’Donnell and Zack Perry finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Eighth grade

Toyon finished first in the girls division. Sydney Remus, of Toyon, finished first with a time of 14:27.81. Fellow Warriors Bridgette Boriolo and Sage Miller finished third and fourth with times of 15:05.84 and 15:06.66 respectively. Christian Family Learning’s Erica McCutchen finished fifth with a time of 15:20.52.

In the boys race, Avery took first, followed by Toyon and Mark Twain. Mark Twain’s Chris Roberson finished second with a time of 13:42.80. Avery’s Noah Adams finished third, followed by Toyon’s Garrett Hesser and Anthony Chavoya.
