Avery, Toyon and Sonora walk away as 2018 champions

The 46th AMA boys’ basketball tournament crowned Avery Middle School, Toyon Middle School and Sonora Elementary School as champions Feb. 17 at Mark Twain Elementary School in Angels Camp.

In the sixth-grade division, Avery finished in first place, followed by Pine Grove, Ione and Mark Twain. All-Tournament honors were earned by Everett Holt of Ione, Ryan Duran of Pine Grove and Avery’s Walker Mauer, Ryder Foust and Ryan McDaniel.

Toyon won the seventh-grade division. Mark Twain came in second, followed by Avery and Linden. Toyon’s Jay Clifton and Braeden Orlandi, along with Mark Twain’s Nathan Reeves and Angel Zamudio and MacDonald’s Avery Griffen were named All-Tournament players.

In the eighth-grade division, Sonora beat Toyon to claim first place. Avery came in third and Ione took fourth. Sonora’s Kai Perez and Jacob Cassanetto, along with Toyon’s Travis Byrd and Omar Cervantes and Avery’s Eric Trent earned All-Tournament honors.
