Summerville wins it, 35-6
The Summerville High football team crashed Bret Harte’s homecoming party Friday night with a 35-6 win at Dorroh Field.
Bret Harte dual threat quarterback Chad Testa rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown, but the Bullfrogs (1-5, 0-1 Mother Lode League) never recovered from a 21-point second quarter by Summerville on the opening night of MLL play.
“We shot ourselves in the foot too often in the first half,” Bret Harte coach Scott Edwards said. “Obviously, we were not able to pull ourselves from that hole.”
Summerville (6-0, 1-0) got a pair of touchdown passes from Jesse Roberson in the first half and took advantage of three interceptions, including one that was returned for a score and one that set up another score. Another Bears touchdown was set up by a snap that sailed over the head of the Bret Harte punter, resulting in a 31-yard loss and Summerville possession inside the 10-yard line.
“Our defense actually did some very nice things,” Edwards said. “They were just left with a short field to defend a few times.”
Luke Brewer led the Bret Harte defense with 12 tackles and Logan Lowe added 11.
Bret Harte will look to get its first MLL win Friday night when it travels to Sutter Creek to play Amador.
Summerville, meanwhile, will look to prove it is a legitimate league title contender when it hosts defending MLL champion Argonaut Friday in Tuolumne. The Mustangs easily defeated Linden 41-3 in their MLL opener Friday.
After Friday night’s performance, Edwards believes Summerville will be in the mix in the MLL.
“Summerville is solid, physical and steady,” Edwards said. “They look like a mature team that will not beat themselves.”
Summerville won Friday’s JV game 31-6.
