Out of 34 Calaveras youth wrestlers, 24 walked away with medals while competing Jan. 21 at the Summerville Tournament in Tuolumne. Out of the 24 medals, 13 of the were first place.
"The kids wrestled very tough this week,” said Calaveras Youth Wrestling head coach Cliff Randolph. “When you look at the team as a whole, kids that weren't medaling at the beginning of the year are starting to contribute now to the medal count. That's very good to see. I was really impressed with the heart the kids are bringing to the matches. They really dig down to win those close matches.”
Picking up first place finishes with a combined record of 41-1 were Adam Johnson, Timothy DeYarmon, AJ Kosta, Caden Graham, Drake Johnson, Zachary Coggin II, Owen Shahan, Noah Johnson, Cynthia Meza, Chappie LaSan, Jordan Coburn (189 pounds and 204 pounds) and CJ Meza.
Calaveras Youth Wrestling had seven grapplers finishing in second place with a record of 12-7. Finishing in second was Lukas Walters, Rylan Graham, EJ Watson, Christian McCarty, Cody Rodriguez, Miale Hie-Kosta and Elijah Mantz.
Finishing in third place was Silas Langdon, Ryan Osborn, Evan Graham and Josh Manzo. And collecting a fourth place finish was Johnny Coburn, Emily Fuller and Joshua Hughes.
“We head to Angels Camp on Sunday (Jan. 28) for a tournament,” Randolph said. “That's in our backyard and I want to come away with a lot of hard fought wins to represent the local crowd.”
