Runners tune up for MLL finals
FRESNO – The Bret Harte High cross country team won the sweepstakes award for the best combined frosh/soph team at Friday’s Roughrider Invitational.
Competing on the state meet course at Woodward Park, Bret Harte’s frosh/soph girls team finished first and the frosh/soph boys placed fourth in their respective races. Kaylynn Davis was second out of 52 runners in 14 minutes, 26 seconds, and Erin Vistnes was third in 14:45 to lead Bret Harte in the 2.2-mile race. Also placing in the top 10 for Bret Harte were Francesca Rael (seventh) and Amelia Maurer (10th).
In the frosh/soph boys race, Nolan Johnson was seventh and Jerrod Wagner was 10th for Bret Harte.
In varsity races, the Bret Harte girls placed fourth and were the highest placing Division IV school, finishing behind a trio of Division III schools. Hannah Cantrell, Madison Ward, Katharine Aiton and Alejandra Rodriguez finished closely packed between 19th and 23rd for the Bullfrogs. Cantrell had the top time of the group, finishing the 3.2-mile race in 21:37.
In the varsity boys race, Bret Harte was sixth overall and third among Division IV schools. Joe Hollett finished 18th out of 121 runners in 17:03 and Tristan Boblet was 24thin 17:10 to earn medals for the Bullfrogs.
The Mother Lode League cross country finals will be held next Wednesday, Oct. 24 at Orvis Ranch.
Two Redskins medal in Folsom
FOLSOM – Devin Scheidt of Calaveras placed fifth out of 68 runners in the freshman boys race at Saturday’s Bella Vista Invitational. Scheidt completed the 2.1-mile course in 12 minutes, 41 seconds.
Also receiving a medal for a top-10 finish at the meet for Calaveras was Olivia Borchin, who placed 10th out of 105 runners in the frosh/soph girls race in 14:53.
Also for Calaveras, Michael Stickels was 13th in the freshman boys race; Makayla Ruthrauff was 30th and Brynn Merrill was 42nd in the frosh/soph girls race; and Jesais Hall was 28th, Jacob Williams was 31st, and John Andersen was 41st in the sophomore boys race.
Bret Harte 182,
The Bullfrogs shrugged off last Tuesday’s loss at Escalon and showed they will be tough to beat in Monday’s league tournament, shooting their lowest score of the season at Greenhorn Creek in Thursday’s Valley Foothill League North dual match.
Emaline Ellsworth had three birdies en route to a 1-under par 35 to earn medalist honors. Also for Bret Harte (11-1 VFL North), Keryn Thompson shot a 48, which was her low score for the season.
Bret Harte needed to finish ahead of Escalon at Monday’s VFL North tournament at Greenhorn Creek to win the league championship.
