You never know when you’ll meet your spirit animal

John Liechty

As we wander through life, there are times we feel as if everything happens for a reason and other times, things seem to be completely random. But under some circumstances, we have the feeling that we are being led, or even guided in a certain direction. Why is it that we are drawn to specific locations, occupations, hobbies and behaviors?

As I looked toward the shoreline on a casual day of fishing, the answer became clear. We are not in this journey alone. There is an unspoken companion that lives deep inside us all: our spirit animal.

A spirit animal, or often referred to as your power animal, is a representation of the traits and skills that you are supposed to learn or have clear. Now, some may not know what their spirit animal truly is, although mine has shown itself time and time again.

It all started as a joke among the family when we were watching a TV show that made reference to the term spirit animal. We all laughed as we placed random animals on each other that best described our characteristics. When it came to my turn, the idea of river otters soon became a crowd favorite. I chuckled along and was OK with the idea as the alternatives could be worse.

The initial idea of being a river otter came from the fact that diving into the creek after midnight was a comfortable occurrence. But as time grows, my resemblance to this creature becomes more apparent.

What do river otters do best? They are among the best fishers on the lake, and will move from location to location to find the best fishing. They have a keen understanding of their surroundings and are able to adapt at a moment’s notice to find the next catch. I can relate to that.

You never know when you’ll meet your spirit animal

On this day, the answer became clear as we spotted a river otter basking in the sun on a warm boulder. He, too, had been fishing in the same spot as me. With a belly full of fish, he was scratching his back and wallowing in the warmth and was completely content. As we approached, he was not at all threatened. We acknowledged each other’s presence and went back to our day. Back to fishing and enjoying the beauty of Mother Nature.

As I spend day after day and countless hours on the lake, I find myself elated to know that I have a guide with me; one with true and natural born Xperience. Now, as I am guiding others to the best fishing on the lake, I keep the instincts of my spirit animal close and know that the next catch is only seconds away.
