Mary Hyodo-Polk is the featured artist at Gallery 10 in Sutter Creek for the month of May. The gallery welcomes the show with a reception on Saturday.
Hyodo-Polk has created art since early childhood, drawing on the margins of magazines and discarded books. She says drawing for her was second nature. She took many art courses from some of the finest professional artists in different mediums including clay sculptures, composition and color theory, drawing in pencil and charcoal, painting in acrylics, oils, pastels and watercolors. She eventually settled for trying to develop her own style.
She went to uninstructed figure drawing sessions twice a week doing from one- to 20-minute poses and occasionally doing one pose for two or three hours to keep her drawing skills honed. She says she likes the spontaneity of watercolors and the fluid transparent glazing you can’t get in any other medium. Plus, she says, it’s easy to transport watercolors when she decides to paint in pleine air. But because every medium has something different to offer, Hyodo-Polk creates in a mixture of mediums.
Her works have been juried into shows and exhibited in many different places – including international shows and county fairs – and have won ribbons and prizes (seven for best of show and 11 first-place awards so far) and other awards. In one show in the Bay Area, the judge bought her painting before it was hung for the show.
Hyodo-Polk is currently a consignment artist at Gallery 10 and she displays abstracts, figurative drawings, still lifes, landscapes and more.
A reception opens her show from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, complete with champagne and handmade goodies. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays. For more, visit gallery10suttercreek.com or call 267-0203.
