Time was running out and Calaveras High School girls’ water polo trailed McNair by one goal, 12-11. With seconds left on the clock, Calaveras’ Jamie Smith knew she only had one chance to send the game into overtime. At the last possible moment before the game clock expired, Smith blasted a shot that didn’t stop until it hit the back of the net.

Smith’s goal sent the game to overtime, which Calaveras eventually won 13-12 on Aug. 30 in San Andreas.

“I thought about it and I’m really surprised that I actually made that shot,” Smith said. “At the time, I was really nervous because if I missed that shot, we would have lost the game.”

Smith finished the afternoon with a team-high six goals and two assists.

“It was a really fun game,” Smith said. “We learned a lot of things and even figured out things that we needed to improve on.”

Calaveras won’t return to action again until Sept. 13 when it faces McNair in Stockton. Smith is looking forward to playing another game, which is hopefully as exciting as the first one.

“I’m itching to have another one of those games,” Smith said. “It was really exciting and the adrenaline rush pushed us further.”
