Calaveras captures MLL JV title with 47-14 win over Bret Harte

The 2023 junior varsity football season came to an end on a cold night in Angels Camp. Bret Harte hosted Calaveras and the Red Hawks picked up a 47-14 victory over the Bullfrogs on Oct. 28 at Dorroh Field in Angels Camp.

The win capped Calaveras’ perfect Mother Lode League season. The Red Hawks captured the league championship and a 5-0 record. After losing its second and third game of the season, Calaveras won its final seven games and finished the season with an 8-2 overall record.

Calaveras beat Carson (36-27), Big Valley Christian (28-7), Galt (51-0), Summerville (20-12), Amador (26-6), Sonora (33-14), Argonaut (34-7) and Bret Harte (47-14). The only losses came in back-to-back weeks against Ripon Christian (8-0) and Ripon (12-0).

Bret Harte’s JV squad finished the season with an overall record of 1-7, while going 0-5 in the Mother Lode League. Bret Harte’s lone win was a 24-0 road victory over Millennium. The Bullfrogs lost to Golden Sierra (31-7), Denair (40-0), Amador (35-0), Sonora (48-0), Argonaut (21-14), Summerville (34-0), and Calaveras (47-14).

Calaveras began the game against Bret Harte with the first score of the night. Red Hawk Ethan Ayala scored on a 32-yard run to give Calaveras a 7-0 lead. Bret Harte responded with a 31-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ezequiel Robles to Brendon Prescott. Following a missed PAT, Calaveas held on to a slim 7-6 lead.

Later in the first half, Calaveras’ Ayala broke free for a 67-yard touchdown run. The second quarter ended with Calaveras freshman quarterback Cohen Curran breaking free for a 19-yard scoring run to give the Red Hawks a 21-6 halftime lead.

The second half began with Calaveras sophomore Enrique Hernandez returning the kickoff for a score. Ayala found the end zone for a third time and a 52-yard run, which pushed Calaveras’ lead to 41-6.

Bret Harte scored its second touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. Robles connected with Carlos Bettencourt for a 14-yard touchdown pass. Calaveras scored its final touchdown on the last play of the game. Freshman Colton Ray broke free for a 45-yard scamper and Calaveras picked up the 47-14 victory.
