Catholic Healthcare West announced Wednesday that Patti Monczewski will be the interim CEO of Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital in San Andreas, effective Oct. 5.

She is assuming leadership responsibilities in light of Feliciano Jiron’s recent resignation from that role.

Monczewski is the chief operating officer/vice president at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento, according to a press release from Catholic Healthcare West.

She will continue her leadership role within CHW at Mercy General Hospital, as well.

“I am pleased to be able to assist Mark Twain during this time of transition,” Monczewski said.

Sister Bridget McCarthy, senior vice president of operations for CHW, was in charge of finding an interim CEO for the hospital and is also leading the search for a permanent replacement.

“Patti has more than 25 years of financial and administrative experience in health care, which will serve this hospital well as we continue the recruitment process,” McCarthy said. “We are in good hands.”

“She is outstanding and I expect she is going to be absolutely wonderful for this hospital and this community,” said Dr. William Griffin, radiologist and chief of staff for Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Larry Cornish, vice president of facilities and project development for the hospital, said he’s looking forward to working with Monczewski.

“I have worked with her in the past. She’s part of the CHW family. I am very optimistic that Patti is going to lead us in the direction that we need to go to provide the quality that the community expects from our hospital and the safety the community expects, and that we can have a good financial performance. This is one of her areas of expertise.”

Monczewski served since 2008 as the chief operating officer/vice president at Mercy General, which has 341 beds and about 2,200 employees, the release stated.

She is responsible for administrative direction, evaluation and coordination of functions and activities to ensure operations objectives and results are in accord with overall hospital needs and goals. Monczewski oversees the medical staff office and central verification unit, physician recruiting/business development, neuroscience program manager, outpatient rehabilitation, guest services, telecommunications, volunteer services, food and nutrition services, environment of care, pharmacy, Mercy Clinic Norwood and three other community clinics, laboratory and imaging.

She recommends improvement to hospital facilities and oversees construction and renovation of structures and purchase of new equipment. She is the current chair of the Mercy Telehealth Network steering committee, which has added five remote satellite locations to provide telestroke (videoconferencing and image sharing technology) and other services to patients throughout California.

Monczewski also serves as hospital compliance and privacy liaison at Mercy General, overseeing and advising the hospital president and senior leadership team on ethics and compliance issues to ensure compliance with federal and state laws and CHW policies.
