Iraqi war vet talks to Learning Center students

Navy medical Corpsman Noah Glanville was the guest speaker during Veterans Day ceremonies at the Christian Family Learning Center near Angels Camp.

Glanville, a Bret Harte High School graduate, was with one of the first units to cross into Iraq when the war started.

“There were many times when I didn’t think I was going to make it,” Glanville told the Learning Center students, adding, though, that he found support and strength through prayer.

During the Iraqi war, fourth-grade students at the school sent Glanville a gift box, filled with everyday items such as toothpaste, sunblock, and even pre-moistened towelettes, known as baby wipes, to help the service men and women combat the dirt and grime of the desert.

Glanville answered students’ questions, and got his biggest reaction of groans and gasps when he told them about the lack of bathing facilities.

“I went 56 days without a shower … and let me tell you, the baby wipes helped,” Glanville said.

Students also read a list of names of veterans submitted by other students and staff.

And eighth-graders presented a timeline of America’s military service, from the French and Indian War of 1754 to the present war against terrorism.
