Latest record moves Bullfrogs closer to golf title

Enterprise report

RIPON – The Bret Harte High girls golf team moved one step closer to a fourth straight Valley Foothill League championship with another record-setting performance.

On Tuesday, senior Caitlin Locke shot a two-over par 33 to lead Bret Harte to a 145-164 victory over Ripon at Jack Tone Golf Course. It was the Bullfrogs’ lowest score in school history at the par-31 course, breaking by four strokes the mark they set just weeks earlier in a match with Ripon Christian.

The Bullfrogs (15-0, 13-0 VFL) have set, and sometimes re-set, school records on seven different courses this season, including La Contenta Golf Course in Valley Springs, where the VFL Tournament will be contested at noon Monday.

Bret Harte and Central Catholic were tied with 26 points each – teams earn two points for each regular-season victory – heading into a head-to-head showdown Thursday afternoon at Greenhorn Creek. The winner of that match will take a two-point edge into Monday’s 18-hole league tournament, in which teams receive an additional two points for each team they finish better then.

The VFL Most Valuable Player race will also be decided on Monday. Locke, runner-up to two-time winner Allison Suarez of Calaveras in last year’s MVP race, bolstered her standing as a front-runner by earning medalist honors on Tuesday against Ripon (12-2 VFL).

Colleen Smith and Kirsten Locke added 37s for Bret Harte and Shannon Woodward shot a 38.

Calaveras 249, Livingston 267

ATWATER – Shalane Langstaff shot a 49 to earn medalist honors and the Redskins won their second straight match on Tuesday at par-36 Rancho Del Rey Golf Course.

Melanie DeMarco added a 62 for Calaveras (6-6 VFL).
