Sonora resident Eugene D. Colis, 46, was arrested around midnight Aug. 4 on the 700 block of S. Main Street in Angels Camp after allegedly attacking a police officer during a traffic stop.

According to a press release issued by the Angels Camp Police Department on Aug. 6, Colis initially provided a false name to the officer and failed to provide a driver’s license and photo identification after he was pulled over for a lighting equipment violation. As the officer patted Colis down outside the vehicle for weapons and identification, Colis attacked the officer and a physical fight ensued. Colis broke free of the officer, running south down S. Main Street. He was tased and apprehended by the officer after a brief chase.

In addition to five outstanding warrants for his arrest issued out of Tuolumne County, Colis was driving on a suspended license and was in possession of multiple stashes of methamphetamine.

A female passenger was also cited for possession of meth and was released at the scene.

Following the incident, Colis was medically cleared at Mark Twain Hospital and is currently in the custody of the Calaveras County Jail facing charges for battery on, obstruction of, and providing false information to a police officer, as well as other drug and driving related charges in addition to his outstanding warrants.

Colis’ driving privilege is currently suspended and his vehicle has been impounded.
