Reed Fire breaks out in Copperopolis

Update, 9:13 p.m.: Cal Fire TCU reported that firefighters have fully contained the Reed Fire.

Update, 5:13 p.m.: Cal Fire TCU reported that the fire is 60% contained. It was determined that equipment (a grinder) was the cause of the fire, and the responsible party was cited.

Update, 3:39 p.m.: Cal Fire TCU reported that firefighters are continuing to build and strengthen containment lines, and the fire size has now been calculated at 9.7 acres due to more accurate mapping.

Update, 3:20 p.m.: Cal Fire TCU reported that forward progress has been stopped by firefighters on the Reed Fire, which broke out near Main Street and Reeds Turnpike in Copperopolis.

A small wildfire was reported in Copperopolis at 2 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

The Reed Fire is currently at 15 acres with a moderate rate of spread and no structures threatened, said Emily Kilgore, the public information officer for Cal Fire’s Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit.

There are currently multiple resources on the fire, including nine engines, one handcrew, one dozer, two water tenders, one air attack, two tankers, one helicopter and multiple overhead, Kilgore said.
