Ronald Lee Hankins of Murphys died of a heart attack Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006. He was 66.
Mr. Hankins was born Sept. 6, 1940, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Russell W. and Margaret L. Merringer Hankins. As a youngster, he was involved in Cub Scouts and received the Eagle Scout award in Boy Scouts. He was active at Central Park Presbyterian Church and sang in the youth choir.
He served in the U.S. Navy, visiting Japan on two tours, and graduated from San Jose State University, before joining Japan Airlines, where he worked for 36 years. His job as cargo sales manager included work in New York, Cincinnati and Chicago.
He was associated with Senior Net and set up Senior Net Learning Centers in the Chicago area and in Cedar Rapids. Upon retirement he became the West Coast representative for Senior Net.
He loved golf, travel, basketball, and skiing, and was instrumental in organizing his Washington High School Class of 1958 reunions.
He also was a member of the Ophir Bear Mountain Lodge 33, where he recently became senior deacon.
Mr. Hankins leaves his daughter, Ann Marie Hankins and her husband, Chris Schuyler of Chicago. He also is survived by his former wife, Zoe Hankins of Palatine, Ill.; his sister, Marilyn L. Kromrey and her husband, Fred, of San Jose; a friend, Martha Knabke of Murphys; and a grandson, Theo Schuler of Chicago.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Masonic Lodge in Murphys. Interment will be at Cedar Memorial Park in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Dec. 30. The Rev. Jim Bonewald of Knox Presbyterian Church will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials in the form of donations to the Masonic Scholarship Fund or to Senior Net, a nonprofit organization that helps seniors learn computer skills, at 900 LaFayette St., Santa Clara, CA 95050.
