Rusty Bullfrogs shake off Bruins

A 10-day lay off was enough to slow down the Bret Harte High girls basketball team, but the rust wasn’t permanent.

In their first game since falling to Del Oro in the finals of the Sonora Kiwanis Tournament on Dec. 2, the Bullfrogs overcame a slow start to beat Riverbank 55-38 in a non-league game on the road Tuesday night.

“It was our first game in 10 days and we were just out of sync,” Bret Harte coach Rick Soracco said. “In the second half, we cleaned it up, played better defense and started moving the ball around better.”

Bret Harte (3-1) led 21-18 at halftime, but outscored Riverbank 34-20 in the second half.

Senior guards Shawna Shires and Jenny Haskell led the way for the Bullfrogs. Shires had 10 points, five steals and four assists, and Haskell had 10 points, four steals, and four assists.

Riverbank (4-2) took advantage of 14 first-half free throws to stay close, but Bret Harte’s pressure defense started taking its toll on the Bruins in the second half.

Offensively, Soracco said Bret Harte’s assists were way up in the second half.

“Our shot selection was much better,” he said.

Rachel Brunson led Bret Harte inside with six points and six rebounds. Wendie Cañez had a good all-around game, according to Soracco, with six points and five assists, Lauren Sword scored seven points, and sophomore Sydney Aardal, a varsity newcomer, added eight points.

Bret Harte plays Hughson at 6 p.m. today and Ceres at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the round-robin Ceres Tournament. The Bullfrogs opened the tournament against Atwater on Thursday evening.
