Ski Report: Bear Valley




The eight-race Bud Light/ All Sport Grand Slalom Series concludes Saturday with a doubleheader.

Three-time Olympian Kyle Rasmussen will be present to set the pace for the race and to present the series’ division winners at the awards party in the afternoon.

Sunday, there will be a Season Pass Holder Fiesta, featuring a free lunch for holders of 2002-03 and 2003-04 season passes.

Also Sunday, there will be a free Rossignol ski demonstration.

The resort has 44 kilometers of groomed track and skating lanes open on 27 trails. The trails are 40 percent fresh powder, 30 percent skier/rider-packed snow, and 30 percent machine-groomed snow. Eight of 11 lifts are open.

As of Thursday, there was 24 inches of snow from the latest, April 1 and 2, storm. There was 8.5 feet of snow at Bear Top, 7.5 feet at the lodge and 3.5 feet at the bottom of Grizzly Bowl.

The weather forecast is for windy conditions with snow likely today. Snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches is possi-ble. Saturday is expected to be mostly cloudy, with a chance of snow showers.

Bear Valley’s tentative closing date for the season is April 20.

KIRKWOOD

Kirkwood has 48 trails open. Surface conditions are powder and machine-groomed powder. Five lifts are operating. The Terrain Park and Halfpipe are open. The Cross Country Center has 50 kilometers of groomed trails, with skating lanes as well as snowshoeing.

As of Thursday, Kirkwood has received 24 to 36 inches of new snow, bringing the snow depth to 84 to 152 inches.

Children 12 and younger ski for free Sundays when accompanied by a paying adult. There is a limit of two children per adult and holidays are excluded.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Friday, forecasting windy conditions with snow likely, then decreasing in the afternoon. The chance of snow showers will continue under cloudy skies Saturday. Partly-cloudy conditions will prevail Sunday.
