SPORTS BRIEFS: Ski season opens at Kirkwood




The Kirkwood Ski Resort kicked off its 2002-03 downhill ski season on Friday. The cross-country season opens on Thanksgiving. For more information on lodging, call (800) 967-7500. For more information about Kirkwood, go to www.kirkwood.com Bear Valley opens the following week on Friday, Nov. 29.

BRUISERS SOFTBALL SIGN-UPS BEGIN

The Calaveras Bruisers softball team will have a sign-up and information meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday at Round Table Pizza in Valley Springs.

The Bruisers are a competitive softball traveling team for girls ages 8 through 18 and is open to girls in all counties. Most of the tournaments are within a 50-mile radius.

SIGN-UPS SOON FOR YOUTH WRESTLING

A new sports season is right around the corner and the 2003 Arnold-Murphys-Avery youth wrestling program will help kick it off Wednesday, Nov. 27, with sign-ups at Bret Harte High School.

Sign-ups will be from 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 39. Competitors must be at least 10 years old. Eight- and 9-year-olds can sign-up on a waiting list and be added if there is room on the roster. The fee is $45.

YOUTH BASKETBALL SIGN UPS BEGIN

The basketball season is about to get under way and the Calaveras Youth Basketball Association’s season is no exception. The CYBA will hold sign-ups for the 2003 season at the Calaveras High School gym on Dec. 7 and 14 from 10 a.m. to noon.

First through ninth-graders are encouraged to sign up. The cost is $30 for the first child and $10 for each additional child. Scholarships are also available. Make checks payable to CYBA. The CYBA is also looking for coaches.

Applications can be picked up at Exxon Jackpot, San Andreas Texaco Village Mart, Valley Springs Ray’s Athletics, Altaville/Angels Camp Valley Fitness, Valley Springs Fitness Center and local Calaveras school offices.
