Young Bret Harte softball team gains experience

The Bret Harte High softball team is still young, but no longer inexperienced.

On Wednesday, Bret Harte won for the fourth time in five games, getting key contributions from its only veteran players in a 2-0 victory at Linden.

Senior Dannah Dryer pitched a three-hit shutout and classmate Cassie Garcia broke a scoreless tie with a

two-run home run over the center-field fence in the top of the sixth inning.

The win kept Bret Harte (6-12, 5-3 Mother Lode League) one game back of Summerville in the race for the league’s second, and final, spot in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V playoffs, but coach Clayton Carpenter isn’t ready to start thinking about playoffs yet. Instead, Carpenter talked about his young team’s improving defense after their second straight errorless game.

“Like the Linden coach told me after the game, this team is really starting to come together,” Carpenter said.

“It’s starting to get exciting.”
