The Bret Harte and Calaveras high girls volleyball teams open play tonight in what coaches anticipate to be a wide open Mother Lode League this season.

“There has been a lot of turnover with some significant players moving on after last season and some coaching changes as well,” Calaveras coach Mikki Koepp said.

Calaveras hopes to challenge for its first MLL title since 1985. The Redskins, who have a talented lineup led by second team all-MLL setter Savannah Duncan, open MLL play at home tonight against Argonaut.

The Redskins tied for second with Amador last year behind Summerville but were left out of the Division IV section playoffs.

They enter league play coming off a strong second day at the Golden Valley Tournament in Modesto that included victories over Riverbank and Enochs.

“I feel like we’ve got some great physical ability this year, but so far consistency hasn’t been our strong point,” Koepp said. “If we can develop the mental part of the game a bit, I’ll have very high expectations for this team.”

The Bullfrogs played seven matches at the Pleasant Valley Tournament in Chico this weekend, with wins against Del Norte, Shasta and Sutter.

“I was very happy with the outcome of the tournament,” Bret Harte coach Richard Juarez said. “Bret Harte ladies learned a lot about themselves and how we play the game.”
